Subang’s defunct Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport may continue to feature in national transportation as an express bus hub.
Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board chairman Datuk Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar today revealed plans to create an integrated inter-city express bus terminal at the site of the old airport's Terminal Three early next year to ease congestion in the city.
This will see the phasing-out of existing bus terminals at Puduraya, Hentian Duta and Hentian Putra.
Raja Ahmad said the move, approved by the Selangor Government, was also to improve express bus services and help make tourism the top ringgit earner.
He said the site had been chosen as it was close to major highways and not affected by heavy traffic.
"Our purpose is to ease congestion in the city centre, especially in the Puduraya area," he said.
The Government had earlier proposed the extension of the Star-LRT line to Subang airport in view of future development in the area, but no decision has been taken yet.
Puduraya, he said, would be turned into a commercial centre.
Raja Ahmad said the CVLB would be introducing an integrated ticketing system for express buses by year's end that would allow passengers to buy tickets from petrol stations and magazine kiosks.
Under the system, a ticket can be used to travel by express bus from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Star and later to Kuantan and back to Kuala Lumpur again. A consultant has been engaged to study the proposal.
The proposal is part of the Government's integrated ticketing transport system plan, which may also see the expansion of the use of Touch 'N Go card for express bus tickets.
An industry source said the Government had approved the integrated ticketing concept, but had to revise it earlier this year to accommodate the light rail transit systems.
There are currently 142 express bus companies operating nationwide.
Plans are also under way to build three new integrated transport terminals in Lembah Subang, Gombak and Bandar Tasik Selatan.
These new stations are expected to link rail transport systems with express bus pick-ups.
