BIOGRAPHY OF IMAM AL GHAZALI


The real name of al-Ghazali is Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Muhammad At-Thusi. He was born on 450 hijrah in a place near Khurasan name Thus. He lost his mother when he were small and live with his father and his little brother name Ahmad. His father is a poor men and illiterate. They live in small house and never taste any luxurious things.

One day when his father feels that his life will end soon, he asks one of his friends to take care of his sons. He says to his friends that he really sad that he cannot read or write and he didn’t want his sons will be illiterate like him so he give all his saving money to his friend to use it to take care his two sons.

When his father died, came his father friend who being promise to his father to take care of them. He is a sufi and since then he teach al-Ghazali and his brother until all the money that his father gave to him finished. Because the sufi is also a poor men, he couldn’t afford to take care of al-Ghazali and his brother any longer and sent them to one madrasah. At there he study under one famous Jurist name Imam Al-Haramayn Abu Al-ma’li Al-Juwaini. He studies really hard until he manages to master in Mazhab As-Syafie, debate, usuluddin, usul fiqh, and philosophy.

He stayed there until his teacher Imam Al-Haramayn past away in 478hijrah. He then travel to the camp of the gavenor named ‘Nazzam Al-Malik’ and have a discussion and debate with the ulama’ and Jurist there. They impress with the ability and the intelligences of Imam Al-Ghazali that lead the governor to appoint him as a teacher in Madrasah An-Nazamiyyah at Baghdad. He then goes to Iraq to fulfill his duty as a teacher there.

He was 34 years old at that particular moment and it seems that his popularity was at the peak of mountains. He has been celebrating cheerfully when he arrives at madrasah Nazamiyyah. Everyone was impressed with his words and his wisdom. He was at the golden age of his achievement at that time. Even though he seems to be a famous and wise person at that time, he always study and read others ulama’ books for example ‘Quut Al-Quluub’ and because of this book he experience asceticism meaning to say that he didn’t want to allow himself to live in luxurious life anymore. He then makes a drastic decision on the month of Zulkaedah to left all his position and luxurious lifestyle in Baghdad and travel to Makkah for a pilgrimage. After that he goes to Sham and stayed there for 10years and filled half of his times in Baitul Maqdis. Most of his time were full with uzlah (lonely meditation), Mujahadah and clean out his heart from any bad manner that will demolish his submission to Allah. He become zuhud and deepens his knowledge on Tasawuf and Sufism. Most of his books were written at these years for instance the most famous one is Ihya Ulumuddin.

However after been asked by many scholars for him to teach the society again like the old day he then go to Nisbur to teach in Madrasah An-Nazamiyyah again on 499 hijrah. This time around he came to teach with different intention and not expecting any material or position as a reward for his lecture. Just after a few years, al-Ghazali then left the Madrasah again and this time he really firm to quit on becoming a teacher and holding any positions in the society. He wants to be an ordinary man and live in zuhud. Al- Gahazali then going back to his hometown in Thus and setup his house to become a place for people to learn tassawuf and memorizing the Quran. He was called “hujjatul Islam” and past away on Monday 14 Jamadil Akhir 505 hijrah.
